Frequently Asked Questions

1. What grade levels are involved? (If they start at different times of the year, please send me that info as well.)

Abney Band is open to all 4th and 5th grade students at the beginning of the year. At the end of the 2018-2019 school year, 3rd graders will be assessed on instruments and offered a chance to commit to band for the 2019-2020 school year as a 4th grader.Students who transfer to Abney during the year and were previously enrolled in their school’s band program are welcome to apply for Abney Band.

2. What sections and instruments can they try out for?

Students pick their top 3 instruments they’re interested in, and will be assessed on these choices and more by music staff. Brass instruments available are trumpet, trombone, and possible spaces for french horn and tuba. Woodwind instruments available are flute, Bb clarinet, Eb alto saxophone, and possible spaces for bass clarinet and tenor saxophone. Students interested in percussion must pick 2 other options, pass the Percussion Assessment, and generally have high grades and excellent behavior records. Percussion placement is extremely limited at Abney.

3. What is the commitment, such as days of the week to stay after school only? (Not school hours)

At this time, extra rehearsals are announced as far ahead of time as possible and are optional, and are either at 7:45 am when school opens, or after school until 4:30 pm. In the future, we will have a very limited number (1-2) of mandatory after-school rehearsals in preparation for performances.

For the rest of the 2018-2019 school year, all performances are during school hours.

4.Fees? and for what?

The band fee is $30.00 - this pays for your method book and folder, Abney Music shirt, transportations fees, and general supplies for your instrument.

Abney has a very limited number of instruments available for students to rent for the school year - the rental fee is $50.00. Students and families are responsible for the care and upkeep of a rented instrument and agree to pay for all costs of repairs for any damages incurred while rented to the student.

5.When are tryouts?

At the end of the 2018-2019 school year, 3rd graders will be assessed on instruments and given all necessary paperwork and information to start band the next year as 4th graders. Current 4th grade members will be given a chance to commit to band the next year as 5th graders.

In the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, there will be a small enrollment period for 4th and 5th graders with priority given to brand new students who have not had a chance to apply to Abney Band.

6. How many off campus events do you all do throughout the year?

Currently for the 2019-2020 school year, we have two off-campus events planned for 5th grade band members and one off-campus event planned for 4th grade.

I am blessed to live in the New Orleans music scene, filled with many talented musicians I am lucky enough to play with. I have played trombone and sousaphone with Red Hot Brass Band, Big Fun Brass Band, Storyville Brass Band, Sunshine Brass Band, and others. I have also served as pit orchestra trombone player for Grease, Anne, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Guys and Dolls, Pippin, and others, and have taught trombone privately for 9 years.
